About Sophia McCarthy - LPC, LMFT

Sophia McCarthy Wasilla Professional Counselor

Sophia has spent more than 20 years helping individuals, couples, and families navigate trauma, relationship challenges, life transitions, and other complex personal experiences. She is passionate about supporting people as they gain a deeper understanding of themselves, strengthen important relationships, and move toward lives that feel more connected, meaningful, and aligned with their values.

Having called Alaska home for several years, Sophia values the strong sense of community found here in the Valley. As a wife and mother of five, she understands firsthand the joys, challenges, and ever changing dynamics of family life. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time on her small farm and traveling, both of which help her stay grounded and connected to what matters most.

Education & Training

Sophia holds dual master's degrees in Counseling Psychology and Marriage & Family Therapy from the University of Akron, as well as a Master of Counseling from Alaska Pacific University. She is currently completing her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Fielding Graduate University.

Her training reflects a longstanding commitment to understanding the ways relationships, life experiences, and personal histories shape emotional well being. Sophia is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and integrates trauma informed approaches into her work with individuals, couples, and families. She also draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness based approaches, and principles of positive psychology.

Experience

Throughout her career, Sophia has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including community mental health, outpatient counseling, psychiatric emergency services, child welfare, and corrections. These experiences have provided her with a broad understanding of human resilience and the many ways people adapt to life's challenges.

Today, her work focuses on helping clients heal from difficult experiences, navigate relationship and family concerns, manage anxiety and stress, and move through periods of transition and personal growth. She enjoys working with adults, couples, and families who are seeking lasting change and a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships.

Counseling Perspective

Sophia believes therapy should provide a space where people can slow down, reflect, and approach life's challenges with greater clarity and self compassion. She offers a calm, thoughtful, and collaborative environment where clients feel supported in exploring both the difficulties they face and the strengths they already possess.

Her approach integrates insight oriented work, practical strategies, and a trauma informed lens, tailoring treatment to each client's unique goals and circumstances. Sophia values building strong therapeutic relationships grounded in trust, authenticity, and respect, believing that meaningful and lasting change occurs when people feel both supported and empowered throughout the process.
