Psychiatric Services and Medication Management in the Palmer - Wasilla Area
At Mat-Su Mental Health in Wasilla, we provide psychiatric evaluations and medication management for children, teens, and adults. Medication is considered as one possible part of a broader treatment plan, based on each person’s symptoms, medical history, concerns, and goals. When appropriate, we coordinate with counselors, primary care providers, and other members of the care team to support connected, evidence-based treatment.
Deciding whether to seek psychiatric care can feel like a significant step. You may be dealing with anxiety that rarely quiets down, difficulty focusing, persistent sadness, loss of interest, low motivation, intrusive thoughts, emotional changes, sleep disruption, or symptoms that interfere with school, work, relationships, or everyday life. You may also have tried counseling or other approaches and still feel that additional support could be helpful.
Medication is not the right choice for everyone, and psychiatric care should never feel rushed or one-size-fits-all. Our goal is to help you better understand what you are experiencing, discuss available treatment options, and make informed decisions about your care. When medication is appropriate, ongoing appointments allow us to evaluate how it is working, address concerns or side effects, and make thoughtful adjustments over time.

Medication Support for Adults
Adults may consider medication support for many different reasons. You may be managing work, relationships, parenting, caregiving, or major life changes while also coping with anxiety, depression, difficulty focusing, intrusive thoughts, mood changes, sleep disruption, or other symptoms that make everyday life feel harder than it should. Some adults seek psychiatric care after symptoms begin interfering with daily routines, while others have been quietly managing them for years.
Medication support may be helpful for adults who:
Experience anxiety, persistent worry, panic, or intrusive thoughts
Feel ongoing sadness, low motivation, irritability, or loss of interest
Struggle with focus, organization, impulsivity, or completing daily responsibilities
Notice changes in sleep, energy, mood, or emotional regulation
Find that symptoms are affecting work, relationships, parenting, or everyday routines
Are participating in counseling and would like to explore whether medication could provide additional support
Have tried medication before and need ongoing monitoring or thoughtful adjustments
Medication is not the right choice for everyone, and it is not meant to replace counseling or other healthy forms of support. For some adults, medication can reduce the intensity of symptoms, improve daily functioning, and create more room to use the skills developed through therapy. Our psychiatric provider works collaboratively with each client to discuss concerns, review treatment options, and determine whether medication may be an appropriate part of the overall care plan.
Medication Support for Children and Teens
Children and teens can experience mental health symptoms in ways that are not always easy to recognize. Anxiety may look like frequent reassurance seeking, avoidance, stomachaches, or difficulty separating from caregivers. Depression may show up as irritability, withdrawal, low motivation, or changes in sleep and school performance. ADHD may affect focus, organization, impulse control, and emotional regulation. Other young people may struggle with intrusive thoughts, rigid routines, mood changes, or symptoms that interfere with home, school, friendships, and everyday life.
Medication support may be helpful for children and teens who:
Experience anxiety, persistent fears, intrusive thoughts, or significant emotional distress
Struggle with attention, organization, impulsivity, or emotional regulation
Show ongoing sadness, irritability, withdrawal, or loss of interest
Notice changes in sleep, energy, school performance, or daily functioning
Continue to feel overwhelmed despite counseling, school supports, and home strategies
Need additional support alongside therapy or other behavioral interventions
Have used medication before and need ongoing monitoring or thoughtful adjustments
We work collaboratively with parents, caregivers, counselors, and other members of the child’s care team. Treatment is developmentally appropriate and based on each young person’s symptoms, health history, needs, and goals. When medication is appropriate, the goal is to reduce the intensity of symptoms, improve daily functioning, and help children and teens engage more fully in school, relationships, counseling, and the activities that matter to them.
What to Expect From Medication Management Appointments
Medication appointments are focused on understanding your experience, not just your symptoms. During your initial visit, your provider will take time to learn about your anxiety, medical history, current stressors, and if and how therapy is supporting you.
If medication is recommended, options are discussed clearly and collaboratively, including benefits, possible side effects, and what to expect over time. Follow-up appointments allow space to assess how medication is working and make adjustments gradually and thoughtfully.
We prioritize ongoing communication and shared decision-making at every step.
If it continues to feel overwhelming despite your efforts in therapy, medication support may be a helpful next step. We are here to explore options with care, respect, and collaboration.
Once you reach out, our on-boarding admin will contact you to gather information regarding your specific situation. They will explore with you what provider will likely best meet your needs, and support you in getting set up in our electronic health record.
Mat-Su Mental Health uses Simple Practice, a medical record and portal system that will allow for confidential and HIPAA compliant messaging that ensures your privacy. You will be sent a portal link that directs you to online documentation to be completed prior to your initial session.
This is a great time to ask any questions you might have. After all, where you go for support is your choice, and we want you to feel empowered to assess whether or not we are the right fit for you! Here at Mat-Su Mental Health, our providers believe that a strong therapeutic relationship is essential in the process of creating change. These initial conversations are important in assessing fit, as therapy is not “one size fits all.”
MSMH’s office is conveniently located in Wasilla. Feel free to arrive a few minutes prior to your scheduled session to grab a cup of tea and relax before meeting with your provider. We look forward to meeting you, and are honored you have chosen us to do this work alongside you.
